Campania

Wine from the side of a volcano.

Campania contains many different wine landscapes, but our current route starts somewhere particularly distinctive: Mount Vesuvius.

Here, volcanic sand, sea breeze and old local grape varieties meet on the slopes above the Bay of Naples.

This page will grow as our Campania selection grows. For now, start with Cantine Matrone.

THE GRAPES

Local names worth learning.

Across Campania you’ll meet grapes such as Aglianico, Fiano, Greco and Falanghina.

On Vesuvius itself, Caprettone and Piedirosso are especially important, alongside smaller plantings of Falanghina, Aglianico and other local varieties.

THE PLACE

Volcano + sea.

Vesuvius vineyards grow in volcanic sand and lava-influenced soils, with warm exposure balanced by sea breezes.

Some old vines remain ungrafted because the sandy volcanic soils have offered protection from phylloxera.

IN THE GLASS

Freshness inside the ripeness.

The climate is southern, but altitude, volcanic soils and the sea can keep the wines savoury and energetic rather than simply rich.

Our starting point in Campania

01

Vesuvius · Boscotrecase

The Matrone family has deep roots around Boscotrecase, on the slopes of Vesuvius.

Their five hectares face south and southeast toward the sea, at roughly 50–300 metres above sea level. Many vines are ungrafted, and the estate works with local varieties that Andrea Matrone has been actively trying to preserve.

E’ Magliole is our current way into the story: mainly Caprettone, with Falanghina and Greco.

Dry, savoury and structured, it shows volcanic Campania without becoming heavy.

Cantine Matrone

Andrea Matrone came home to Vesuvius in 2014 and found old vineyards worth rescuing. With his cousin Francesco, he restored the family cellar and brought local grapes back into focus.
