Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of natural red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3–4 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 vanilla bean, split
  • A small piece of ginger, sliced
  • Optional: brandy or rum for an extra kick
  • Garnish: orange peel and cinnamon sticks

1. Selecting the Right Natural Wine

Begin by choosing a high-quality natural red wine. Look for a robust, full-bodied variety with enough fruit to complement the spices.

Check out the natural red wine collection at The Earth Wine; the wines are handpicked from vineyards in Europe. One of the bottles we recommended for mulled wine was Tellus Vinea 2021 Bordeaux by Pueyo, a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend with enough fruit and body for winter spices.

2. Preparing the Spices and Fruit

Add the orange, lemon, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, vanilla and ginger to a saucepan. Pour in the wine and add honey or maple syrup to taste.

3. Heat Gently

Warm the mixture slowly over low heat. Do not let it boil. Let the wine and spices infuse for around 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Add Spirits if You Like

For an extra kick, add a small splash of brandy or rum near the end. This step is optional.

5. Serve Warm

Strain the mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs. Garnish with orange peel or a cinnamon stick and serve while warm.

Enjoy Winter with a Better Bottle

Mulled wine is forgiving and easy to adjust. Start with less sweetener, keep the heat gentle and let the fruit and spices support the wine rather than cover it completely.
