Piedmont

More than Barolo.

Piedmont may be famous for its serious reds, but there is much more to drink here. Across its hills you’ll find familiar grapes like Nebbiolo and Barbera alongside Arneis, Timorasso, Moscato, Quagliano and other local varieties that rarely travel far from home.

Our way into Piedmont is through the growers we work with — and the bottles they make.

THE GRAPES

Famous names, local discoveries.

Nebbiolo and Barbera may get most of the attention, but Piedmont is also home to distinctive white grapes such as Arneis and Timorasso, aromatic Moscato, and lesser-known local varieties including Quagliano.

THE PLACE

Hills matter here.

Piedmont sits in northwest Italy, framed by the Alps and shaped by rolling hills. Altitude, exposure and soil can change noticeably from one area to the next, which is why there is no single Piedmont style.

IN THE GLASS

Much more than big reds.

You can find fragrant whites, light and juicy reds, structured wines, skin-contact bottles and pét-nats. The grape and the way it is made matter just as much as the name of the region.

Four places, four sides of Piedmont

01

Busca & the Colline Saluzzesi

Around Busca, Braccia Rese works with grapes that tell a less familiar Piedmont story — including Quagliano, Chatus and Neretta Cuneese alongside Barbera.

The wines can be light, lively and deliberately easy to drink. PINQ, made entirely from Quagliano, is a good place to start: dry, floral and lightly sparkling rather than the serious red many people expect from Piedmont.

02

Roero

Across the Tanaro from the Langhe, Roero is closely associated with both Nebbiolo and the local white grape Arneis.

Le More Bianche gives us two very different ways into the area. Nebiulin shows a fresher, younger side of Nebbiolo, while Ironia takes Arneis in a more textured direction.

Alta Langa

Higher hills and forest surround Cascina Elena in Alta Langa, where the vineyards sit roughly 420–530 metres above sea level.

One of the most interesting grapes here is Moscato. Instead of treating it only as something sweet, Cascina Elena shows how different it can become when made dry or with skin contact.

Colli Tortonesi

In the eastern hills of Piedmont, Timorasso has become one of the defining local white grapes of the Colli Tortonesi.

Valli Unite’s Montesoro takes it somewhere less conventional: two weeks on the skins followed by ageing in a large acacia cask. The result is structured, tannic and firmly in orange-wine territory.

Piedmont at the Hong Kong table

There is no one pairing for Piedmont. Start with the style of the bottle.

Fresh & aromatic

Think steamed fish, white-cut chicken and lighter seafood dishes.

Light & juicy

Good territory for char siu, roast meats, pizza and an easy dinner with friends.

Skin-contact & textured

Try roast chicken, mushrooms, richer seafood or dishes with a little more seasoning.

Structured reds

Bring out the beef, grilled meats and slower-cooked dishes.

The rule is simple: choose the bottle before choosing the rule.

Meet our Piedmont growers

Braccia Rese

Braccia Rese

Different paths brought the team back to Busca, where they now champion almost-forgotten local grapes such as Quagliano and Neretta Cuneese.
Le More Bianche

Le More Bianche

After fifteen years consulting for other wineries, Alessandro Bovio finally worked out what he did not want to do. When his daughter was born in 2013, he stopped using synthetic chemicals and started building Le More Bianche around his own idea of precise, natural Roero wine.
Cascina Elena

Cascina Elena

Cascina Elena started when Roman winemaker Filippo met New Yorkers Peter and Elaine in Alta Langa. Their vineyards sit high in the hills, surrounded by woods — and the project feels deliberately free from old-school Piemonte rules, which explains wines like amphora-aged Moscato Romeo.
Valli Unite

Valli Unite

More farm than winery: Valli Unite grew from three young farmers choosing to stay on the land instead of leaving for the city.
